Local Enterprise Week 2019 introduces an array of supports for start-ups, small businesses and the self-employed in Westmeath.

This year’s Local Enterprise Week runs from Monday 4th March – Friday 8th March and the workshops are a must to support and upskill, start-ups and established businesses in Westmeath!

Westmeath Local Enterprise Office will be running consultation clinics, workshops and events, to boost the entrepreneurial culture in the county. If you are considering starting a business, have a fledgling business, or would like to scale up, diversify or export, the Westmeath Enterprise Week workshops are must-attend events for you. Both local and national business leaders are involved in the programs, to offer an array of advice, such as guidance and expertise on getting started, business planning, marketing and funding your business.

The annual Enterprise Week packs in a lot of activity over a few days. The events take place all over Westmeath, and the training is delivered by successful people who have navigated the market as business owners themselves.

There are 6 workshops for Enterprise Week, but 2 of them are sold out already. Below are the 4 remaining events that you can attend:

Monday 4th March

Supports for Start-ups

12.30pm - 2.00pm at the Mullingar Park Hotel, Mullingar

Registration will begin at 12:10pm with the event to kick off at 12:30pm sharp.

Guest Speakers:
Cathy Moran - Department of Social Protection
Catherine Darby - Local Enterprise Office Westmeath
Sean Donnellan - MicroFinance Ireland

A light lunch will be served at the end of the presentations. Staff members from each of the organisations will be available to meet with you on an individual basis after lunch.

This workshop is ideal for start-ups & established small and large businesses to find out about all the small business grants that are available.

Tuesday 5th March

LEAN Clinic (one to one appointment)

Athlone Civic Centre

Book a place to speak to Allyson English, VAE Consultancy Ltd who is a LEAN consultant and can answer all your questions about Lean and how it can benefit your business.

You will get a one to one session comprising 1 to 1½ hours per individual business.

The LEAN Clinic is an opportunity to discuss how to improve your company, away from the minute-to-minute business that can get in the way of fresh thinking. The Lean Clinic will allow you to start your journey to growing lean and witness the results in every aspect of their business, that is great for established businesses and start-ups alike.

Lean is a set of "tools" that assist in the identification and steady elimination of waste. As waste is eliminated quality and time improve, in addition costs are reduced.

It is for owners of small businesses ranging from Service Providers, Information Technology, Retail, Hospitality, Manufacturing, and everything in between, looking for ways to improve profits, efficiency, customer service and employee engagement.

Introduction to Tendering

9.30am - 1.00pm Annebrook House Hotel, Mullingar

Introduction to Tendering is designed to be a practical workshop, aimed specifically at small business owners that have never completed a tender before. It aims to demystify the procedures around pitching for, and ultimately winning some of the ‘below threshold’ (i.e. below £25k) work that Local Councils and other Government Bodies/Agencies contract out. The workshop is also suitable for new start-ups that are looking into public procurement as a possible future option and for those looking to pick up some of the small contract opportunities.

The workshop includes:

  • Advice on Proposal Writing (‘proposals’ as opposed to lengthy ‘tenders’).
  • Responding to ‘below threshold’ work (i.e. below £25k) required by NI public bodies.
  • Specifically, proposals for work below the £5K threshold will be coveredHow to simply and easily respond to a ‘mini competition’ by email.
  • Documents that may be required to attach to the email proposal.
  • Finding tender opportunities – registering with the main sources of relevant tender opportunities for SMEs.
  • The eTenders family of websites.

The cost of this Local Enterprise Week workshop is only €20 per person.

An information event on finance and supports for established businesses which will include:

  • Overview of LEO supports.
  • R&D Fund (AGILE) with Enterprise Ireland.
  • Tax Credits and Knowledge Box with KPMG.
  • Lean practices and how they can boost your profits.
  • Cross Border Funds Available from Intertrade Ireland.
  • Enterprise Ireland Funds Available – Mark Atterbury.
  • Local Enterprise Office and Government Supports – Christine Charlton, Head of Enterprise, Westmeath.
  • Research and Development Innovation Fund – Joanne Sheahan – Enterprise Ireland.
  • Research and Development Tax Credits and Knowledge Box - Terri Treacy, KPMG.
  • Break and Networking
  • Lean practices for SMEs – Robert Hernan, Enterprise Ireland.
